Exeter Hospital recently received healthcare equity “leader” status from the national Human Rights Campaign Foundation with a perfect score of 100 points on the healthcare equity index survey. Scores are awarded based on criteria in: foundational elements of LGBTQ+ patient‐centered care; patient services & support; employee benefits & policies; and patient & community engagement. Exeter is the only health care facility in NH, ME, and VT to receive Leader status.

At Exeter, our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) isn’t just a statement—it’s a fundamental aspect of our mission to deliver exceptional care and support to both our patients and our workforce. In 2023, we established the DEIB Council to drive progress in four key areas that lie at the heart of our ability to provide quality care:

Celebrating Workforce Diversity and Belonging

Ensuring Diversity in Recruiting/Hiring Practices

To eliminate bias in our selection process, we’re working to identify and remove barriers to diversity in our recruitment and hiring practices. We’re also partnering with diversity-focused organizations to expand our recruitment efforts.

Continuing Community Investment and Partnership

We believe in supporting and collaborating with community-led initiatives. By investing in partnerships, we’re contributing to positive change and fostering a stronger sense of belonging for everyone.

Affinity Groups

LGBTQ Advisory Committee: Established to ensure a supportive environment for the LGBTQ community, our advisory committee is committed to various initiatives:

Educational Sessions: We provide educational sessions for our medical staff and employees, often leveraging content from respected institutions like the Fenway Institute in Boston.

Listening Sessions: Patient stories and staff listening sessions help us better understand the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in seeking healthcare.

Contribution to DEIB: Our committee’s efforts contribute to our overarching DEIB initiatives, creating a more inclusive environment.

Health Equity Index: We’re actively pursuing Health Equity Index status for our organization to demonstrate our commitment to LGBTQ inclusion.
